Each year, the Carson/Torrance branch of the NAACP holds its Freedom Fund Awards Dinner highlighting contributions that community members have made to the education and civil rights legislation for people of color. Compton Superior Court Judge Thomas N. Townsend and Los Angeles Urban League President John W. Mack are honorees for this year's NAACP awards dinner.
President Lyons believes the road to freedom begins by taking the first step of expanding one's mind through education. "We need to remember that many people grow up with difficult circumstances," he said. President Lyons also stated, "For many people, 'opportunity' is just a word and the chance for an education goes to somebody else. Just as education opened its doors to me and enabled me to grow, you and I can do no less for the children of today. How they grow, and the opportunities we open to them, is how you and I, the California State University System, and especially CSU Dominguez Hills will be remembered."
Tickets for the dinner are available at a cost of $60.00 by calling Rose Simpson at (310) 320-3393 or Joseph Alford at (310) 885-3500.
