Controversial, Former Harvard Law School Professor,
Derrick Bell, Discusses Autobiography

"Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth"


CARSON, Calif. - Controversial, former Harvard Law School professor, Derrick Bell, will speak at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) about his new book, "Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth," on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. in the Natural Science and Mathematics building, Room D129. Bell will explore his life's work as an educator and political activist. He will also review his rise to prominence as a voice for racial justice at Harvard Law School.

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 20, beginning at 2 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m.

Derrick Bell is the author of seven books including, "Faces from the Bottom of the Well." Bell has been called a daring writer and unafraid to try new forms to articulate his ideas. He is an internationally recognized legal scholar and civil rights activist whose protest of Harvard Law School's refusal to give a black female professor a tenured position at the school.

Bell, who received the Teacher of the Year Award by the Society of American Law Schools in 1985, has invested his lifetime in the legal arena. He became the first tenured black professor at Harvard Law School in 1971. Bell has served as counsel for the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund, and Deputy Director for the Office for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Bell is currently a visiting professor of law at New York University.
