Annual Breakfast provides forum to honor the legacy of Dr. King

Carson, Calif. - Outstanding private citizens, students and local community groups who are building on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through their work to improve social conditions will be honored during the ninth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast Awards 2003 at the Carson Community Center on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The awards breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue through 10:00 a.m. The community center is located at 801 East Carson Street.

Each year, California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) joins the City of Carson to highlight special individuals and civic groups for their tireless work in the areas of social justice and community service. The awards breakfast is intended to focus on the ideals that guided the life work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, awards will be presented in the categories of Social Justice; Student Communiversity Service and Drum Major for Justice; and the Communiversity Service Award.

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would still be traveling throughout the country today in pursuit of equality and the freedom for everyone to have access to a quality education had a sniper not taken him from us," said Dr. James E. Lyons, Sr., president of Cal State Dominguez Hills. "While he may not be with us in body, his spirit and drive for social justice lives in us today. We must continue to do our part in working towards a society where the 'quality of character' serves as the basis by which people are judged."

Tickets for the awards breakfast can be purchased for $15.00 per person by calling Ormond Rucker at (310) 243-3420. "The Unity Breakfast Awards is rapidly becoming a focal point for our university's observance of African American History Month," President Lyons noted. "We are looking forward to a great turnout."
