Former NCAA Official Discusses Social, Legal and Academic Issues
Of Collegiate Athletics During Seminar at CSUDH

Carson, Calif. – Daniel Boggan, former Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), will discuss the role of the NCAA and collegiate athletics on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. in the Marvin Laser Recital Hall, A-103, of the LaCorte Hall at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), 1000 E. Victoria St., Carson 90747.

WHEN: Thursday, September 11, from 1 – 2 p.m.

Social, legal and academic issues in collegiate sports and the relationship of the NCAA are expected to be topics of discussion during a one-hour presentation as Boggan explains the policy-setting and enforcement role of the NCAA. Boggan, will share his experiences with the NCAA and how the status of college athletics is being impacted by the changing legal environment in the sports industry. Formerly, Boggan served as vice chancellor at UC Berkeley.

The discussion is co-sponsored by the University’s Athletics Department and the Office of the President. Thomas Landefeld, associate dean, College of Arts and Sciences expects an informative session for faculty, staff and students. “Based on Dan Boggan’s experiences in academia and athletics, he brings perspectives that are of interest to the entire CSUDH community, effectively crossing all disciplines,” Landefeld said. “With the sports issues currently in the headlines, his talk should serve as a springboard for some very intriguing discussions.”

CSU Dominguez Hills is involved with the NCAA in two other capacities. In January, CSUDH Athletic Director Julie Sandoval was chosen to participate in the NCAA Fellows Leadership Program. Sandoval is only one of eight athletics administrators who were selected to this year’s class of NCAA Fellows. In November, 2002, Cal State Dominguez Hills President James E. Lyons, Sr. was elected to the NCAA Division II Presidents Council. In that capacity, President Lyons serves as a member of the governing body that oversees the NCAA’s Division II Management Council.
