Cal State Dominguez Hills Institute for Cultural Diversity
Joins Campus Sorority to Collect Eyeglasses for Developing Countries

CARSON, Calif: – The Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity & Internationalization and members of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) are culminating their efforts to collect eyeglasses for desperately needy people in developing countries. Dubbed, “Sight Night,” Halloween 2003 will bring University faculty, staff and students together with volunteers from the Lions Club and LensCrafters to give eyeglasses to people from around the world. The final date to donate is Nov. 7.

Sight Night is part of a nationwide collection drive by Give the Gift of Sight, a family of charitable vision care programs sponsored by the LensCrafters Foundation in conjunction with Lions Clubs International. Each year, Give the Gift of Sight sponsors missions for developing countries including Mexico, Bolivia, Laos and Thailand.

“Our efforts will change lives,” said Patricia Hamilton, coordinator for the University’s Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity & Internationalization. “Some of the people who receive these eyeglasses may not be able to work because of their poor eyesight, and may never have clearly seen the faces of their own family members.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one-fourth of the world needs corrective eyewear, but many people, especially those in developing countries, cannot afford to buy eyeglasses.

Hamilton said anyone can donate eyeglasses at any one of the strategically placed depositories on campus. “We are asking our University community members who want to be a part of this effort to deposit their used eyeglasses in special collection boxes located throughout the campus,” Hamilton said. Donors can find the eyeglass collection boxes at the University Advisement Center (WH A220), Admissions and Records (WH C290), Associated Students Inc., Office of Student Life, Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity and Internationalization (SBS E308), and the campus Women’s Center (WH D160).

California State University, Dominguez Hills takes pride in offering a “World of Opportunity” to everyone who desires a quality higher education.
