Cal State Dominguez Hills To Hold “High Step Achiever’s”
Recognition Ceremony at University Theatre

Carson, Calif. – California State University Dominguez Hills’ (CSUDH) Educational Opportunity and Student Support Services Programs will host the second annual High Steps Achiever’s Recognition ceremony on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre.

“ The High Steps Achiever’s Recognition Ceremony is a program designed to highlight the academic and personal achievement of participants in the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP), Student Support Services (SSS) and McNair Scholar’s programs,” said EOP/SSS Program Director Walter C. Jones. “High Steps represents each program’s attempt to involve the families and friends of participants in their collegiate lives; scholars suggest that family involvement is critical to the persistence of students both in secondary and postsecondary education, especially for underrepresented students.”

California State Assemblywoman Karen Bass (D-47th District) will deliver the keynote address. CSUDH alumna, Bass, (Class of ’90, Bachelor of Science, Health Science: Physician Assistant) was elected Nov. 2, 2004 to represent an assembly district that includes the cities of Los Angeles and Culver City, as well as the communities of Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, View Park, Cheviot Hills, Westwood-UCLA and Windsor Hills. She is the ninth African American female elected to the California legislature in the last 15 years.

Previously, Bass founded the Community Coalition in 1990 to improve the quality of life in South Los Angeles, and served as its executive director for 13 years.

Bass has been a clinical instructor at the USC School of Medicine since 1986 and joined the UCLA School of Public Policy as a Senior Policy Fellow in 1998. She completed a post-graduate degree as a physician’s assistant from the University of Southern California.

Master of Ceremonies Charles Walker, adjunct professor in the CSUDH Theatre Arts Department, is a familiar face on television and in the movies having worked on a variety of projects including the TV shows “The Practice,” “NYPD Blue” and the motion pictures “Anchor Man” and “Soul Plane.”

DIP Records guitarist Dirk K will provide the entertainment for the evening.
