FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CSUDH Alumna Delays Commencement Walk, Joins Daughter, a Graduating Senior, 29 Years After Earning Degree
CARSON, Calif: - Alumna Sherrill Freeman Moore (Class of 1976, B.A., Psychology and Sociology) graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) after taking years away from college to marry and have children, including her daughter, Theresa. Starting at the age of 5, Theresa would watch her mom bring books home; sit at the table and study.
Moore didn’t walk during the commencement 29 years ago, but wished she had. Then, in September 2004, she attended a reception in Washington, D.C. hosted by President James E. Lyons, Sr. for CSUDH alums living on the East Coast, and he invited them to take part in this year’s commencement.
Moore has flown from her home in Virginia to walk in Friday’s commencement at Dominguez Hills as one of dozens of alums while her daughter, Theresa Doyle, graduates magna cum laude with a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a Natural Science/Blended Teaching Credential Option. Doyle, too, began college, quit to marry and have children, then resumed in 1998. She, too, brought books home and her children watched her study. Her daughter attends El Camino College in Torrance and her son attends Torrance High School.
Moore spent 22 years as a director of three preschools in the South Bay area before retiring. Doyle has been a teacher’s aid at Eshelman Elementary School in Lomita for years and said she hopes an opening for a teacher comes up soon so she can stay there. Meantime, her daughter works at Eshelman as a teacher’s aid and may go into education as a career.
