FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -
Fannie Lou Hamer Queenmothers’ Society Launches Hurricane Relief Effort for the Gulf Coast Region
The Fannie Lou Hamer Queenmothers’ Society in the Africana Studies Department of California State University, Dominguez Hills will launch a massive collection drive for victims of the Gulf Coast region in the first week of October.
The Fannie Lou Hamer group includes Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-37 th District) and Vergie Seymore of Vergie’s Manor, a residential care facility in Carson.
This phase of the relief effort, which is driven by Hurricane Rita and in anticipation of storms that might yet come, will begin on the university campus, 1000 E. Victoria St. in Carson, just east of Avalon Boulevard between the 405 and 91 freeways.
The Queenmothers’ project focuses on infants and school-age children. They are asking for diapers, nonperishable baby food, baby formula, and new clothing for infants. For school children, they are asking for new clothing, including shoes, socks, underwear, dresses, skirts, slacks, shirts, blouses, sweaters, jackets, and toiletries. Boxes for transporting the items are also needed.
For additional information, contact Seymore at (310) 323-0676 or Joyce Johnson at (310) 347-6440.
