Men’s and Women’s
Soccer Coach Named CCAA Soccer
Coach of Year
CSUDH alum captures fourth award in 12 years
Carson, CA --
Cal State Dominguez Hills men's and women's soccer head
coach Joe Flanagan (Class of ’91,
B.A., Political Science) year and degree once he gets back
to you, or, if no degree, then years attended and major)
has been voted the CCAA Men's Soccer Coach of the Year
by his fellow CCAA soccer coaches. Flanagan earns his
fourth men's coaching award in 12 years at the helm of
the men's soccer program.
"It's
nice to be recognized by your peers for a job well done
and for a year of good work," Flanagan says of his
accolade, his first in four years. Then he added, before
the CCAA championship games started Nov. 6, "I appreciate
the honor, and hopefully we can bring home a championship
or two with this Coach of the Year Award."
Unfortunately, his wish did not come true. The men’s
team lost 1-0 in double overtime to Sonoma State—Sonoma’s
first men’s soccer championship—and the women
fell 4-3 after a comeback push that almost worked against
UC San Diego. It would have been the women’s second
consecutive CCAA championship and the mens’ fifth in
seven years if they had won.
Flanagan also captured CCAA Men's Soccer Coach of the Year
honors in 1995, 2000, and 2001, winning National Coach of
the Year honors in 2000 after leading the Toros to a National
Championship in a 2-1 four-overtime classic over host Barry
University.
Overall, Flanagan holds a career 173-64-16 (.715) record
as men's head coach, and a 56-22-10 (.693) ledger as women's
head coach.
As a player at Dominguez Hills from 1986-89, Flanagan was
a star mid-fielder who won All-CCAA and other honors. In
2000-01, Flanagan was honored as the Alumnus of the Year
by the CSUDH Alumni Association for his outstanding achievements
on and off the field, as well as for being an excellent ambassador
to the surrounding South Bay communities.
