Artist Will Discuss Her Art in “Galaxy, Wunderkammer, Index”

Carson, CA-The artist will be available to discuss art and her exhibition after the opening reception for “Leslie Sutcliffe: The Galaxy, Wunderkammer, and Index Paintings” on Oct. 4 in the University Art Gallery at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

The reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The conversation with Sutcliffe will begin at 6 p.m., also in the Gallery. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be refreshments.

Sutcliffe, an artist, writer, curator, and longtime adjunct instructor at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, is also an experienced printmaker who co-founded APEX Etching Editions Limited and El Moro Etching Editions.  She has worked the last five years with images from encyclopedias, dictionaries, illuminated manuscripts, and art history books.  She said she is intrigued by the relationship between words and visual images, and she manipulates both in her elegant, luminous paintings ranging from swirling galaxies in her “Galaxy” series to the intricate structure of a DNA molecule in her “Index” series.

Presentation of this exhibit and related events at the University Art Gallery at Cal State Dominguez Hills is sponsored by the Instructionally Related Activities Committee of the Associated Students. Regular Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There is no admission charge.

The Gallery, considered one of the major exhibition venues in the South Bay, is in La Corte Hall, Room A-107. The La Corte Hall building is across Toro Center Drive from parking lot 6. To reach it, enter the University at Tamcliff Avenue-Toro Center Drive from East Victoria Street and proceed straight ahead to the Lot 6 entrance, which is on the right.
