Those Old Eyeglasses Can Help Someone to See Again
Carson, CA-The gift of sight is being collected for the poor in developing countries
during the month of October. Those who have old eyeglasses and sunglasses of any prescription
that are no longer needed can drop them off at the Admissions and Records office at California
State University, Dominguez Hills, and they will be taken to those who need them but have no other
access to them.
To date, The Gift of Sight program, in which Dominguez Hills and the community participates, has
provided nearly 5 million people with eyeglasses. They hope to reach 7 million by 2008. The annual
collection at CSU Dominguez Hills is coordinated by the Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity
and the University’s Phi Sigma Sigma, which describes itself as “a dynamic sisterhood of powerful women
fostering uncompromising principles, igniting positive change, and embracing individuality.” Philanthropy
has been a part of Phi Sigma Sigma’s mission since it was founded in 1913.
To drop off eyeglasses—which should be in an eyeglass case or something protective, such as an envelope—take
them to the Admissions and Records Office on the second floor of the Welch Hall building and put them into
the drop box. Admissions and records is located just around the corner from the elevator on the second floor.
It is also near the top of the outside stairway from the south entrance to the building.
Welch Hall is east of Toro Center Drive, across from parking lot 3. There are free 30-minute parking spaces,
when available, on the north side of Welch Hall. If no spaces there or on the street are available, Lot 3 is
closest to Welch Hall. Lot 3 is most easily accessible from the Tamcliff Avenue-Toro Center Drive entrance off
East Victoria Street. The university is at 1000 East Victoria Street, on the east side of Avalon Boulevard
between the 91 and 405 freeways. Parking passes are available from the yellow dispensing machines at the periphery
of Lot 3.
For more information, call the Institute at (310) 243-2589.
