Carson, CA – Expanding
its commitment and success in encouraging college enrollment
within the African American community, California State University
will host “Super Saturday” on August 4 at California
State University, Dominguez Hills from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Super Saturday was designed to help
African American students and their parents throughout
Los Angeles County understand
the college application and admissions process, housing,
financial aid, course requirements and collegiate life at
CSU’s 23 campuses. CSU alumni, faculty, students and
staff from across the state will provide a systemwide perspective
during a variety of workshops scheduled for the day. There
will also be workshops for students intending to transfer
from community colleges.
“The CSU is going on its third year of partnering
with church leaders and congregations to reach out and attract
more students within the African American community to the
college classroom,” said Gayle Ball Parker, CSUDH’s
director of outreach. “Super Saturday will be a fun
and festive, yet very informative event. Along with refreshments,
entertainment, giveaways and prizes, we will also be providing
campus tours, and awarding one scholarship to one student
in attendance.”
Bishop Clarence E. McClendon of Full Harvest International
Church, CSUDH President Mildred Garcia, and former CSUDH
Interim President Boice Bowman will welcome those in attendance
at 10 a.m., followed by the energetic sounds of The Full
Harvest International Choir. The college fair and workshops
will extend from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The creation of Super “Saturday” reflects the
success and growth of CSU’s “Super Sundays.” For
the past two-and-a-half years, Super Sunday events have featured
CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and CSU campus presidents
addressing African American congregations throughout the
state to bring awareness to the role of parent involvement
and early preparation in getting to college.
Since the first Super Sunday in February
2006, CSU staff and church education liaisons have met
regularly to develop
ways to further reach out to African Americans. Some of the
new programs include regular financial aid workshops, expanded
distribution of college materials to students from sixth
- 12th grade and their parents, and the development of an
advisers’ guide for those who work directly with families
within these communities.
Super Saturday will take place in
CSUDH’s Sculpture
Garden, located across from Parking Lot 6. Attendees are
encouraged to arrive at 9 a.m.
