President García’s
First Convocation To Be Webcast
Carson, CA – New
California State University, Dominguez Hills president,
Mildred García, Ed.D., will formally greet faculty
and staff for the first time Monday, Aug. 20, as she
officially opens the 2007-2008 academic year at Fall
Convocation. A first-ever live convocation webcast will
mark her inaugural university-wide address.
“Everybody
wants to hear what President Garcia has to say,” said
Warren Ashley, Ph.D., director of the Center for Mediated
Instruction and Distance Learning, on the decision to webcast
convocation. “From the number of people who have
told me they are going, I would say it is possible that
attendance will exceed the capacity of the theater.”
Simulcasting
the convocation over the Internet also will allow faculty
members who cannot make it to campus the opportunity to
view the proceedings. Ashley noted that many faculty members
teach remotely hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of
miles from campus as part of Dominguez Hills’ distance
learning programs.
Fall
Convocation is the time in which the president highlights
the university’s and individual departments’ accomplishments
during the past year and set goals for the future. It also
serves as the official welcome to the university to all
new faculty and staff, with the provost, vice presidents
and deans introducing the new employees to their departments.
In the past year, 87 new employees have joined the faculty
and staff of Dominguez Hills.
Among
the new employees is President García, who was named
to the post in May and took office as of Aug. 1. In taking
the position, García became the first Latina president
of a California State University campus—and Dominguez
Hills’ first female president. García previously
was president of Berkeley College in New York and New Jersey.
The
convocation ceremony will take place in the 485-seat
University Theater beginning at 9 a.m. The Internet broadcast
will begin at that time, as well. The link to view the
webcast is http://dhtv1.csudh.edu/Fall2007/ava_player.php.
The site is up now with links enabling users to test
their computers for compatibility before Monday.
