University President Receives Key
to City of Carson
Carson, CA –Carson
Mayor Jim Dear and fellow council members will present California
State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García
with the key to the city during a welcome reception at the
Carson Community Center Wednesday, Oct. 17.
The key is being presented to García in recognition
of her recent appointment as the seventh president of CSU
Dominguez Hills. García moved to California from New
York in August to take the position as president of CSU Dominguez
Hills. In doing so, she became the first female president
of the campus and the first Latina president in the California
State University system.
“It’s a welcoming gesture,” Mayor Dear
said. “The key to the city of Carson is something the
mayor presents to people we feel are important to the future
of this city. After meeting with Dr. García I feel
that the relationship between the university and the city
is going to be strengthened with her as president. After
all, the prosperity and success of the university and the
prosperity and success of the city are integrally tied.”
CSUDH is located in Carson and has served as the alma mater
of many of its residents and government representatives.
Offering 45 undergraduate and 21 graduate degrees, the university
is widely regarded for its teacher education, nursing and
business administration programs. It also has one of the
largest distance learning programs in California.
More than 200 community leaders are
expected to attend the invitation-only welcome reception
and key to the city presentation
beginning at 5:30 p.m. At the reception, the CSU Dominguez
Hills ROTC unit will present the colors and the national
anthem will be sung by members of the university’s
music department.
Also receiving a key that night will be Dr. Richard Vladovic,
the recently elected Los Angeles Unified School District
board member for District 7 representing the Carson area.
