Highly Regarded Expert in Higher
Education
to Speak at Cal State Dominguez Hills
(Carson,
CA) – Alexander Astin, professor emeritus
of education and founding director of the Higher Education
Research Institute at University of California, Los Angeles,
will be at California State University, Dominguez Hills
(CSUDH) Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to talk
about his more than 40 years of experience in the field
of higher education. The event is open to the public and
will take place in the Extended Education Center, Room
1213.
“A Conversation with Alexander Astin” begins
the fourth year of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
speaker series that brings national and international leaders
in higher education to CSU Dominguez Hills to discuss cutting-edge
research and theory related to student success. Past lectures
have explored topics such as student retention, diversity
and globalization’s impact on student success, and
cooperative learning and brain-based research.
“What makes our program different is that we do the
usual workshop … but we also host a Provost's Luncheon
Seminar at which senior administration and the speaker talk
about what senior administration can do to foster student
success. Thus we get a bottom-up and a top-down orientation,” said
James Cooper, professor of graduate education. “We
also tape a ‘talk show’ with each visitor that
is available as a streaming video at the CTL web site (http://ctl.csudh.edu).
To my knowledge, no other university does these three events
for each speaker.”
Astin is regarded as one of the seminal
thinkers in the field of higher education. He has authored
more than 20 books
and hundreds of articles on the subject and has received
many accolades for his research. He has been called the “most
cited author” in the field by the Journal of Higher
Education and the “most admired for creative, insightful
thinking” by readers of Change magazine.
During his talk, Astin is expected to discuss his views
on student assessment and retention, the impact college has
on students, and how to determine academic quality, as well
as his model of student involvement and his role as director
of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program, a nationwide
study of more than 12 million students, 250,000 faculty and
staff and 1,800 higher education institutions.
California State University, Dominguez
Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria St., near Avalon Street,
in the city
of Carson. The Extended Education Center is between Parking
Lots 3 and 6 adjacent to the Home Depot Center sports complex.
A map of the campus is available at www.csudh.edu/site/VisitUs/Maps.asp.
Public parking is permissible in campus lots with a valid
parking permit. Permits are $3 and can be purchased at the
