Dine, Dance the Night Away for
a Good Cause
at An Evening of Elegance
Proceeds benefit the Deborah C. Sears Scholarship Fund
(Carson,
CA) – The hundreds of stylishly dressed
individuals who will be attending An Evening of Elegance
on Saturday, Dec. 1, will be doing more than enjoying a
night of dinner and dancing. They also will be supporting
students at California State University, Dominguez Hills
(CSUDH).
An after-five attire affair organized by the CSUDH Black
Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), An Evening of Elegance
is the primary fundraiser for the Deborah C. Sears Scholarship
Fund, which was established in 1996 in honor of the long-time
faculty member who died of cancer that year at the age of
47. Since 2002, the event has raised more than $25,000 for
the fund.
“Where else can you eat a great meal, dance the night
away AND support a good cause at the same time?” asks
Loretta Adikhai, planning committee chair. “I can’t
think of one place.”
Through the Sears Scholarship, two to three scholarships
of $1,000 each are awarded annually to undergraduate students
who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment of service
to the university and the community, ideals which Sears felt
strongly.
This year, two scholarships were awarded, to Robert Landrum,
a senior majoring in physical education, and Erika Miller,
a freshman majoring in computer science. They will be recognized
during the evening.
Adikhai said this year’s An Evening of Elegance is
expected to be one of the best ever. One reason is the location.
For the first time, the event is taking place on campus,
in the beautiful Grand Ballroom of the university’s
new Loker Student Union. The facility opened this past February.
Additionally, live music at the event
will be provided by Sai Whatt Band, a widely known R&B
band that performs throughout the greater Los Angeles area,
including at the
Dynasty Club in Inglewood and The New Townhouse Club in Los
Angeles.
The evening will begin with a no-host cocktail hour at
6:30 p.m., during which guests can bid on silent auction
items, including gift certificates, gift baskets, and two
nights at the Double Tree Hotel in San Francisco, to name
a few. Dinner will commence at 7:30 p.m., with dancing
at 9 p.m.
Tickets for An Evening of Elegance are $65 per person or
$120 per couple. Table discounts are available. An order
form to purchase tickets is available for download at www.csudh.edu/bfsa/calendar.asp,
or by calling (310) 243-2666. Tickets will not be sold the
night of the dinner.
California State University, Dominguez Hills is located
at 1000 E. Victoria Street, near Avalon Street, in the city
of Carson. A map of the campus is available online at www.csudh.edu/site/visitus/maps.asp.
Parking in campus lots costs $3, and parking permits can
be purchased at the yellow kiosk machines adjacent to each
lot.
