CSU Dominguez Hills Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi to Celebrate 2007 Class of Initiates
Carson, CA – On March 15, the CSU Dominguez Hills chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP)
will add 136 students and 18 faculty, staff, and alumni to its membership for 2007. The event
will be held for the first time in Loker Student Union Ballroom at 4 p.m.
Since its inception in 1897 at the University of Maine, PKP is the nation's oldest, largest,
and most selective all-discipline honor society, with 1 million members throughout the United
States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Notable members of PKP include former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter; jazz legend Dave Brubeck; and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
According to Mary Lou Cappel, coordinator, Recreation and Leisure Studies and president, PKP
Chapter 241, this will be the largest initiation in CSUDH history since its establishment on campus
in 1984. She emphasizes the importance of membership, particularly to students, who are invited to
join based solely on academic achievement, from the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students
and the top 7.5 percent of juniors.
“We want students to feel valued,” she says. “The more things we can give them to crystallize their
value, the better. Last year, I decided we should give out scholarships. Our chapter has never done
that before. We broke the bank on that, but we were able to give a substantial amount of money to these
students, which will enhance our profile on the student front.”
This year, one undergraduate student and one graduate student will receive scholarships of $1,000 each.
Two additional scholarships of $250 will be given to two undergraduate members. These students will be
announced at the initiation ceremony.
Now concluding her third year as chapter president, Cappel has been working to increase PKP’s profile on
campus. Recent accomplishments for the CSUDH chapter include a chapter Website, courtesy of 2006 initiate
Douglas Borcoman, instructional design specialist. There is also now a chapter newsletter, and more visible
advertising on campus.
