CSU Committed to Working Out Settlement Agreement With Faculty Union
Contingency plans in place in the event of strike activity

The following statement may be attributed to Charles B. Reed, chancellor, California State University: – “This morning, we expect that our faculty union will announce the results of a recent strike vote taken among
their members. Since the strike authorization is limited to only dues-paying members of the union – about 10,000
out of a total of 23,300 faculty members – it would only take approximately one-quarter of the total faculty to
authorize the strike
“We are currently in a ten day ‘quiet period’ - following the issuance of the fact finder’s report on Friday,
March 16. This time period is to provide an opportunity for both sides to work on a mutually acceptable resolution.
For our part, we are doing just that.
“While we cannot reveal the specific details, we are doing everything we can to come to a settlement agreement
with our faculty union. We are committed to the process, and will honor the agreement under fact finding not to
reveal any specific information about the report.
“By Sunday March 25, we will know whether we have an agreement or not. When the fact finding report is made
public, it will be clear that the university administration has gone to great lengths to come to a settlement
with the faculty union and avoid the alternative, which would be imposition.
“We hope that today’s announcement does not signal a predetermined outcome on behalf of the faculty union. That
would be a disservice to faculty and students alike. However, if the faculty union conducts any type of concerted
activity, the CSU has in place contingency plans on its 23 campuses to ensure minimal disruption to students and
its employees, particularly faculty members who opt to continue teaching class.
“Although two-day rolling strikes will likely not impact more than one day of instruction per class for our students,
we are implementing these contingency measures to ensure that our campus communities are fully informed and the
safety and security of our students, employees, vendors and visitors is protected.”
Background
The contract between the CSU and the faculty union was first scheduled to expire on June 30, 2005. It has been
extended several times and a contract extension is now in effect until the fact finding report is made public on
March 25. The CSU has made a fair offer to the faculty union that provides a 24.87 percent compensation package
to be paid over the next three years. The CSU employs approximately 23,000 faculty members of which 10,100 are
members of the union. A strike action requires 50 percent plus one vote of those who are members of the union.
