Carson, CA –The
9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition, opening October
3 at the University Art Gallery, CSU Dominguez Hills, features
82 sculptures small enough to fit into a shoebox by a roster of
well-known international artists. The Art Gallery at Dominguez
Hills hosted the 4th and 8th edition of this popular traveling
exhibition in 1992 and 2004, and is pleased to display the 9th
edition of the Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition organized by the Art
Gallery, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
The Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition
concept grew from the desire to present a wide variety of sculptural
ideas, styles and materials
as the small shoebox-size of this exhibit provides broader exposure
to contemporary sculpture. An invitation-only exhibition, this
triennial has attracted a large number of well-known artists from
Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland,
Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Norway, The Netherlands,
South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. To create their sculptures, artists
have used almost every imaginable medium. Cast metal, carved wood,
blown glass, woven fiber, paper maché, molded clay, found
objects, glass beads and feathers have been components of Shoebox
sculptures.
The opening reception for the exhibit
will take place on October 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., and a conversation
with artist
Annemarie Rawlinson will take place at 6
p.m. in the art gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color
catalog with a photograph of each work and biographical information
about the artists.
The 9th International Shoebox Sculpture
Exhibition is organized by the University of Hawai‘i Art
Gallery and supported in part by a grant from the Hawai‘i
State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Presentation of this exhibit
at the University Art Gallery, CSU Dominguez Hills, is sponsored
by the City
of Carson
Fine Arts and Historical Commission. In conjunction with the exhibit, Shoebox
Sculpture art workshops for K-12 children will be presented by art educator
and artist Linda Jo Russell.
The exhibition continues through
October 31. Admission is free to all gallery events. The
gallery is open
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday,
and is located in La Corte Hall A107. The campus is located at 1000
E. Victoria Street in the City of Carson near the junction of the
Harbor, Artesia and San
Diego freeways. Visitor parking permits may be purchased for $3
at
the yellow dispensing machines at the front of each campus lot.
