Torrance Resident Jan Vogel Named
CSU Dominguez Hills
Alumni Advocate of the Year
(Carson, CA)— Jan
Vogel, executive director of the South Bay Workforce Investment
Board,
is this year’s California State University, Dominguez Hills
(CSUDH) Alumni Advocate of the Year.
“We are very fortunate to count Jan as one of our alums
and pleased he is our 2008 Alumni Advocate of the Year,” said
Sheila Butts, CSUDH Alumni Relations director. “He is a tireless
supporter of CSU Dominguez Hills and continues to provide leadership,
wisdom and advocacy for us. He is definitely a model alumnus for
other alumni to emulate.”
Each year, the 23 campuses in the CSU system recognize one of
their alumnus/alumnae for advocacy efforts he or she has made on
behalf of the university at local, state, or federal levels. Vogel
and the other CSU Alumni Advocates of the Year were recognized
at a luncheon during the CSU Legislative Day in Sacramento in April.
As Alumni Advocate of the Year, Vogel will offer
congratulations to the Class of 2008 and welcome them as alumni
to the university
this Friday at the CSU Dominguez Hills Undergraduate Commencement
Ceremony. The ceremony will take place at 8 a.m., Friday, May 23,
in the Home Depot Center Soccer Stadium.
Vogel, a resident of Torrance, graduated
from CSU Dominguez Hills in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He
earned a master’s degree in education from the university
in 1974. An outspoken CSUDH supporter for many years, he serves
on the CSUDH President’s Advisory Board and on the advisory
board for the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. Most
recently he was a member of the Inauguration Community Committee
for the inauguration of President Mildred García, which
took place May 2.
As executive director of the South
Bay Workforce Investment Board for the past 30 years, Vogel has overseen the development of a
variety of job training services for businesses and residents in
the South Bay, including Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne,
Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach and Redondo
Beach. Through its South Bay Business Resource Network, Centinela
Youth Services Inc., and One-Stop Business and Career Centers,
SBWIB invests in both residents and businesses to strengthen economic
development in the region, assisting residents in gaining the skills
they need to find employment and providing employers with not only
a workforce but also any other resources they need to allow them
to be successful.
“Jan’s efforts have had a positive impact on the many
lives he has touched on campus and in the community,” Butts
said.
In addition to his work with SBWIB, Vogel
is president of the Hawthorne Education Foundation, and serves
on the board of the
Centinela Valley YMCA, the executive board of the California Workforce
Association, and on the advisory boards of the Inglewood Unified
School District, the El Camino College Foundation and the Southern
California Regional Occupational Center Foundation. He is past
president of the Hawthorne Rotary Club and has been awarded the
Hawthorne Lion’s Club Man of the Year Award, the Rise and
Shine Youth Program Person of the Year Award, and CSUDH’s
Katherine B. Loker Friend of Education Award.
