California History-Social Science
Project at CSU Dominguez Hills Receives Teaching American History
Grant
(Carson, CA)— The
California History-Social Science Project (CHSSP) at California
State University Dominguez Hills and Long Beach, in partnership
with Inglewood and Lynwood Unified School Districts, has received
a 2008 Teaching American History grant of nearly $1 million over
five years. The grant was one of nine awarded in California this
year — and one of four awarded to CHSSP sites — by
the U.S. Department of Education.
In announcing the 121
grants totaling $114.7 million that were awarded nationwide,
U.S. Secretary
of Education Margaret Spelling
said, “The Teaching American History grant program offers
educators opportunities to work with colleagues and universities,
nonprofit organizations, libraries, or museums to learn more about
our country’s history, culture, and democratic tradition.
By providing professional development for teachers, we can help
them support young people in becoming active, informed citizens.” A K-16 collaborative focused on increasing student achievement
in history and social science through professional development
programs for teachers, the California History-Social Science Project
has seven regional sites across the state that are coordinated
by universities. The CHSSP at Dominguez Hills was founded in the
1990s and in 2005 merged with the one at CSU Long Beach to provide
teachers in the Long Beach-South Bay region with the latest pedagogies
in the fields of history-social science. This is the fourth Teaching
American History Grant the CSUDH/CSULB project has received in
collaboration with local school districts.
For this Teaching American History grant,
CHSSP-CSU Long Beach and Dominguez Hills will partner with both
the Inglewood and Lynwood
Unified School Districts to design a professional development program
for teachers in grades 4, 5, 8, and 11 they are calling “Teaching
American History: Success and Rigor for All.” The grant is
designed to deepen and expand teachers’ knowledge of history,
develop their historical thinking, and improve their means of engaging
their students in the study of American history.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our
current professional development work with Lynwood and begin work
with the Inglewood Unified School District,” said site director
Lisa Hutton, an assistant professor of education at CSUDH. “My
first eight years of teaching were in Inglewood at Beulah Payne
Elementary School and I am excited about the opportunity to work
collaboratively with the teachers in both districts to increase
students’ understanding and achievement in American history.”
