CSU Dominguez Hills President Receives
Torrance Chamber’s Latino Award of Excellence
(Carson, CA)— California
State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García
was presented with the Torrance Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence
in Leadership at its Latino Awards of Excellence luncheon on
May 29 at the DoubleTree Torrance.
The Torrance Chamber annually
honors Latino businessmen and women and organizations for their
significant contributions to the South
Bay’s Latino community. Others being recognized at the
luncheon included the Port of Los Angeles, with the Excellence
in Latin
American Trade Award, and Alcoa Fastening Systems, with the Engaging
the Latino Workforce Award.
Dr. García received
the Excellence in Leadership Award for her role as president
of CSU Dominguez
Hills, a university that
serves a large Latino student population (39%). In taking the
position last August, García also became the first woman
president of a CSU campus who is of Latin-American descent.
Accepting
the award, García stressed the economic importance
of a bachelor’s degree, not only to the graduate but
also his or her community.
“
The bachelor’s degree is the degree that moves people into
a higher socio-economic status,” she said and then
invited business leaders to join CSUDH in taking people
to the next level. “Help
us educate the citizens of California, the citizens of
Torrance.”
CSU Dominguez Hills is
the only four-year university in the South Bay and plays an important
role
in ensuring the
economic
vitality
of the region. Many of its graduates work for companies
in the region, including the two companies honored at
the luncheon.
In addition, CSUDH alumni call the area home; Torrance
is third most
popular residence for alumni.
“
We are the university of the South Bay,” Garcia said.
