CSU Dominguez Hills Announces
New Vice President for Planning and Enrollment Management
(Carson, CA)— Mildred
García, president of California State University, Dominguez
Hills, has announced the selection of Susan Borrego as the university’s
first vice president for planning and enrollment management.
Borrego is currently the
vice president for student affairs at CSU Monterey Bay, where
she has been since 2005. Her first
day
at CSU Dominguez Hills will be Aug. 1.
“
We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Borrego to the Dominguez
family,” García said. “We believe that her student-focused
approach to higher education administration and proven track record
will help us achieve our goals of providing the very best education
to all who wish to learn.”
Under Borrego’s leadership
as the vice president for student affairs, CSU Monterey Bay experienced
a 44% increase in freshmen
enrollment, reversing a three-year decline. Overall enrollment
increased by 32% at the university during her time there.
As had
been the case at Monterey Bay, CSU Dominguez Hills’ enrollment
numbers have been flat over the last several years, falling short
each year of projected targets. Within months of becoming president
of CSU Dominguez Hills last fall, García called for the
creation of a position that would focus on increasing enrollment.
Noting that universities’ budgets are enrollment-driven and
a university’s ability to increase its financial resources
and provide quality academic programs is tied directly to the number
of students served, García said this new position would
play a vital role in the financial and academic success of the
university.
Among Borrego’s primary tasks will be to develop
and implement the university's strategic enrollment plan and a
comprehensive
retention program. This will entail working collaboratively with
the rest of the university’s administration to ensure the
campus provides adequate retention, academic intervention, and
administrative and support services for students. Borrego will
oversee a division that will include departments directly related
to recruiting and retaining students, including admissions, registration
and records, financial aid, outreach and information services,
and institutional research.
Prior to working at CSU
Monterey Bay, Borrego served as associated vice chancellor and
dean of students
at the University of Arkansas
at Fayetteville. She previously was associate dean/director of
minority student affairs at California Institute of Technology,
where she also served as executive director of CALTECH Y, a nonprofit
student activities center at the university.
Borrego is scholar
practitioner who has taught at the University of Southern California
and University of Redlands. Her research
and publications have concentrated on student learning, diversity
including class, and the collaboration of academic affairs and
students affairs to ensure student success.
She holds a Ph.D. in
education from the Claremont Graduate University.
“
During my brief time on campus I met people with a tremendous commitment
to the success of students and the university,” Borrego said. “I
am eager to join the leadership team of President García.
It is an exciting time to be at Dominguez Hills.”
