FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Auditions October 6 and 7 for CSU
Dominguez Hills
Production of “Proof”
(Carson, CA)— The
California State University, Dominguez Hills Department of Theatre
Arts will
be holding auditions on Oct. 6 and 7 for “Proof,” the
second play of the 2008-09 season. The auditions will take place
beginning at 7 p.m. both days in the University Theatre on campus.
This 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama
tells the story of Catherine, who sacrificed college to care
for her mentally ill father, a brilliant,
much-admired mathematician, who has recently passed away. Catherine
claims to be the author of a mathematical proof that one of her
father’s former students, Hal, finds in the attic among her
father’s mostly incoherent unpublished notebooks. But what “proof” does
Catherine have that she, and not her father, is the author? What
ensues is a detective story that explores the uncertainties of
love, trust, personal integrity, and the unpredictability of genius.
The production will be directed by CSUDH theater arts professor
Peter Rodney.
In preparation for the audition, individuals
are requested to read the play and become familiar with the characters.
The audition
will include a scene reading for a character of the director’s
choosing, as well as of a character in a particular scene of the
individual’s choosing.
Rehearsals will take place Sunday through Thursday at 7 p.m. beginning
Oct. 12 in the Edison Studio Theatre. The play opens Nov. 21 and
runs weekends through Dec. 6.
Below is a list of the four parts to be cast, along with a brief
character description:
Catherine – 25 years old. Robert’s
younger daughter who has spent five years caring for her father,
she is, at times,
fierce, almost-feral, sharply intelligent and deeply damaged.
Robert – Catherine and Claire’s
brilliant, mathematical genius of a father (recently deceased).
He is remembered by Catherine
in flashbacks. His mental illness allows him to be affably affectionate
one minute, and then lash out the next.
Claire – Catherine’s older
sister is a currency analyst who lives in New York. Though fond
of her younger sister, she is
just as clearly determined to get her own way, even if that involves
infantilizing Catherine.
Hal – A former student of Robert’s
who would like to get his hands on the mathematical notebooks
that Robert has
kept for years. He possesses a dorky eagerness but holds his own
with Catherine and has his own agenda.
All four characters are capable of surprising cruelty as well
as surprising tenderness.
