(Carson, CA)— The
California State University Dominguez Hills Department of Theatre
Arts is
pleased to present the opening play of the 2008-09 season, “Electricidad,” running
Oct. 17-26 in the University Theatre on campus.
A powerful adaptation by Luis
Alfaro of
Sophocles' famous Greek tragedy “Electra,” “Electricidad” is set
in East Los Angeles, where the crackle and hiss of live electric
wires are ever-present. The character Electricidad keeps a 24-hour
vigil by her father’s corpse, and waits impatiently for her
brother, Orestes, to return from exile in Las Vegas. She will then
convince him to avenge the family of their padre’s murder.
Infused with Alfaro’s sly humor and use of uniquely expressive
Spanglish, Sophocles’ 2,500 year-old text is transformed
into a vibrant, vital and thoroughly unforgettable myth for the
modern age.
