Immigration Scholar Rubén
G. Rumbaut
To Give Keynote at College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences
Distinguished Speaker Series
(Carson, CA) — On
Friday, Oct. 10, UC Irvine sociologist Rubén G. Rumbaut
will be the featured speaker at the California State University,
Dominguez
Hills College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished
Speakers Series luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Loker Student
Union on campus.
A respected scholar on immigration who
has testified before Congress on comprehensive immigration reform,
Rumbaut will talk on the subject
of his recent article, “Immigration’s Complexities,
Assimilation’s Discontents,” published in the sociology
magazine Contexts, in which he wrote about the disconnect between
statistical facts and popular beliefs about immigration in the
United States, as well as misconceptions about immigrant assimilation
and the negative impacts immigrants have on a community.
“Dr. Rumbaut is an internationally respected sociologist
who has conducted extensive studies of immigrant adaptation and
acculturation, and many of his studies have focused on Los Angeles,
Orange and San Diego counties,” said Charles Hohm, dean of
the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. “We are most
delighted that he has agreed to present the third lecture for our
Distinguished Speakers Series.”
Rumbaut, a native of Havana, Cuba, has
been studying immigration and refugee movement for more than
30 years, particularly in the
United States, but also in Vietnam, Cambodia and Latin America.
His research has focused on the psychological and sociological
impacts on immigrants, and immigration policy and politics. He
has written more than a hundred scholarly papers and co-authored
or co-edited a dozen books on immigration, including “Immigrant
America: A Portrait” and the award-winning “Legacies:
The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation.”
Prior to joining UCI’s sociology
department in 2002, Rumbaut was a professor of sociology at Michigan
State University and a
fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences
at Stanford University. He is co-director of the landmark Children
of Immigrants Longitudinal Study, begun in 1991 to track thousands
of youth of immigrant families. He has also directed, in collaboration
with a team of UC colleagues, the large-scale study, Immigration
and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles.
Rumbaut is the founding chair of the International Migration Section
of the American Sociological Association and is a member of the
Committee on Population of the National Academy of Sciences, the
Committee on International Migration of the Social Science Research
Council, and the MacArthur Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood
and Public Policy.
This is the third College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished
Speakers Series Lunch. Past distinguished speakers have included
Kenneth Trevett, former CEO of Los Angeles Biomedical Research
Institute, and Gilbert Ivey, chief administrative officer for the
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
The luncheon is free to attend, but reservations are requested.
