(Carson, CA) — A showing of rare footage of Los Angeles jazz legend Horace Tapscott will be presented Thursday, Nov. 6, at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) for the Third Annual Memorial Tribute to Horace Tapscott.

Presented by the CSUDH Music Department, the event will begin at 7 p.m. in LaCorte Hall A103. Admission is free.

A pianist, composer and band leader, Tapscott (1934-1999) was a mainstay in the Los Angeles jazz scene for five decades. He made a name for himself not only for his avant-garde style of jazz, but also for his social activism in Los Angeles’ inner city neighborhoods. While his dissident behavior ostracized him from the mainstream music industry in the 1970s, his commitment to the community would be Tapscott’s greatest contribution to music in the L.A. region.

It was during the 1970s that Tapscott devoted much of his artistic energies to his Pan-African People’s Arkestra, which he originally formed in 1961. The grassroots, community-based ensemble served as a creative outlet for youth in the community and also as a vehicle for up-and-coming L.A. musicians. Led by Tapscott, the sometimes 30-strong troupe performed a mixture of jazz (often Tapscott original compositions), spirituals, dance and poetry mostly at local churches, community centers and parks.

The video being shown next Thursday night features Tapscott performing his own works, produced on the campus of CSU Dominguez Hills in the early 1990s. His granddaughter Raisha Wilcots will be at the event and provide commentary of the video.

LaCorte Hall is located off Toro Center Drive adjacent to Parking Lot 6 on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hill, 1000 E. Victoria Street in Carson. A map of the campus is available online at http://www.csudh.edu/site/VisitUs/campusmap.shtml.

This event is sponsored by the California State University, Dominguez Hills, Division of Performing, Visual and Digital Media Arts Music Department within the College of Arts and Humanities
