CSU Dominguez Hills Students Compete
In Toro Iron Chef Competition

WHAT: Toro Iron Chef II competition

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 29, 6 p.m.

WHERE: Palm Courtyard, Loker Student Union, CSU Dominguez Hills campus

(Carson, CA) – Student “chefs” will battle once again to claim the Toro Kitchen Throne during the Iron Chef II competition beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

“It’s great for our school because we get students involved and bring in people from around the campus. If you’re interested in cooking like I am, it gives you a way to express yourself,” said Hector Del Pino, a junior who will be participating in the competition.

Four teams of students will compete in the battle to determine who will be the next Iron Chefs of Dominguez Hills. The cook-off, fashioned after the popular “American Iron Chef” television show, will take place in the Palm Courtyard of the Loker Student Union.

“It’s really exciting and unexpected. I’m torn because I don’t know what to do for my entrees and salads because I don’t know what the secret ingredient is,” said Michael Martinez, a sophomore. “I decided to get involved to show these students how cooking is really done and showcase my skills. I watch the show all the time and I can’t wait; this is my chance to do what they do.”

The teams will each have one hour and fifteen minutes to prepare three dishes, an appetizer, salad and entrée of their choice, using the “secret ingredient” that will be revealed the night of the event. Last year’s secret ingredient was buffalo meat.

This year’s competition will be judged by two professional chefs: Executive Chef Michael Cruz of Levy Restaurants at the Home Depot Center and Chef Brunson Achiu of Sysco Food Services; university representatives: Vice President of Administration and Finance Mary Ann Rodriquez, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Randy Zarn, and Natasa Christodoulidou, assistant professor of hospitality management; and a member of last year’s Toro Iron Chef winning team, student Joy Masha.

The competition is co-sponsored by Campus Dining, Toro Productions, the Loker Student Union, the Multicultural Center, the University Bookstore, and Sysco, Republican Master Uniforms and Anza Event Rentals.
