Community Invited to A Day at Dominguez
Learn about programs and enrolling at California State University,
Dominguez Hills
(Carson, CA) – California
State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites the community
to learn about the
university during its annual “A Day at Dominguez” event
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.
During the day-long academic fair, thousands
of prospective students – from
middle school to graduate level – as well as parents and
local school counselors have the opportunity to talk personally
to faculty, staff and current CSUDH students, tour the campus and
on-campus housing facilities, and attend workshops further highlighting
the academic programs, financial aid opportunities, and student
life activities offered at CSUDH. Information sessions will also
take place on preparing for college, choosing a major, and what
middle school students need to prepare for college, as well as
sessions specifically for parents, provided both in English and
Spanish.
A key component of A Day at Dominguez is on-site admissions.
Admissions and records staff will be available to meet with prospective
students and discuss their admissions eligibility, and if eligible,
they can be admitted to CSUDH right then. If a student cannot
be admitted, staff will advise him or her on a course of action.
Students wanting to take advantage of on-site admissions must
first apply online at www.csumentor.edu, bring official transcripts
and test scores, and a check or money order for $55.
Officials encourage first-time freshman to take advantage of on-site
admissions at A Day at Dominguez. Demand to enroll in the CSU system
is on the rise this year. Already, the CSU has experienced a 17%
increase in total applications over this time last year, due in
large part to news that the CSU will close admissions to first-time
freshman at a number of its campus on Nov. 30. Funding for anticipated
enrollment growth within the system was cut from the state budget
in 2008/09 and is not expected for the 2009/20 academic year. As
a result the CSU has instituted stricter applications deadlines,
particularly for impacted campuses, to keep enrollment in check.
Last year the CSU received nearly 400,000 freshman applications
and only admitted 54,000.
CSUDH does not anticipate the need to slow its enrollment and
will continuing accepting applications for first-time freshman
beyond the priority application deadline; however officials strongly
encourage students to apply now, as they will have a better chance
of being admitted.
Registration to A Day at Dominguez is not required
but is encouraged, and lunch will be provided for those who register.
To sign up online,
go to www.csudh.edu/outreach/dayatdominguez.html.
Check-in on Saturday, Nov. 15, begins at
9 a.m. in the Torodome CSUDH gymnasium. The opening session will
take place in the gymnasium
from 10 to 10:45 a.m. The rest of the day’s events will occur
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the campus.
California State University, Dominguez Hills is located at 1000
E. Victoria St., near Avalon Boulevard, in the city of Carson.
A map of the campus is available online at www.csudh.edu/site/VisitUs/Maps.asp.
Parking at campus lots is free on that day.
