FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CSU Dominguez Hills Organizes
King Day of Service Volunteer Day

WHAT: First Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Volunteer Day

WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 5, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE Loker Student Union East Walkway, CSU Dominguez Hills, 1000 E. Victoria St., Carson

(Carson, CA) – The California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Center for Service Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement (SLICE), in partnership with local nonprofit agencies, invites the community to the first Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Volunteer Day on Thursday, Feb. 5.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the East Walkway of the Loker Student Union on campus, representatives from nonprofits will be on hand with information about their organization and the various ways people can volunteer throughout the year. Organizations currently scheduled to attend include Habitat for Humanity, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum, JusticeCorps, AmeriCorps, Better Learning After School Today (BLAST), Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR), Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Company, and Los Angeles Community and Education Partnerships.

In addition, those who stop by that day can take part in a couple of volunteer projects: making origami bookmarks as part of a fundraiser for the Japanese Garden on campus, and putting together hygiene packs for Dr. Sophia Momand, staff physician in Student Health and Psychological Services, who distributes hygiene supplies to the homeless on Skid Row in Los Angeles once a month.

“This day was organized because of President Barack Obama’s mandate to be the change we wish to see,” said Cheryl McKnight, director of SLICE. “He called for a Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but our campus was closed for the holiday. However, we still wanted to do our part.

“With the King Day of Service Volunteer Day we intend to showcase the various ways people can be of service to their community. Plus, having all these organizations in one location makes it that much easier. People don’t have to search out volunteer opportunities; they just have to come out on Feb. 5.”

The King Day of Service Volunteer Day is listed as an event on the USAService.org web site. Individuals can sign up there.
