FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Unique and Unusual Contemporary Teapots
On Display at University Art Gallery

WHAT:            Teapots: Object to Subject

WHEN:            Feb. 4 through March 4; Opening tea party/gallery tour, 4-6 p.m. Feb. 4

WHERE:          University Art Gallery, LaCorte Hall A107, CSU Dominguez Hills

(Carson, CA) – The University Art Gallery at California State University, Dominguez Hills is pleased to present Teapots: Object to Subject, a national touring exhibition that takes a closer look at what is normally considered a simple utilitarian vessel used to hold tea. However, these teapots are anything but ordinary.

The exhibit opens Feb. 4 and continues through March 4.

Toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance, Teapots: Object to Subject is a collection of 50 teapots representing the best from both established artists and the most promising innovative new artists. This is the only greater Los Angeles stop on the tour.

Visitors will encounter teapots modeled after a disparate array of subjects, including a stack of cardboard boxes, a female sunbather, and a painting by Botticelli. The further uniqueness of the teapots lie in the non-traditional materials used to create them, such as cloth or precious metals.

Teapot: Object to Subject is curated by Leslie Ferrin, author of Teapots Transformed: Exploration of an Object. In this travelling exhibit at CSU Dominguez Hills, she suggests that as the teapot becomes more abstracted, its function becomes less relevant. In effect, the subject of the work becomes the primary focus; the initial object, the teapot, becomes a secondary concern for the artist and the viewer.

An opening tea party will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Art Gallery. In conjunction with the opening, Jim Keville, assistant professor of art at CSU Dominguez Hills and an expert on ceramics, will give a tour of the exhibit. His tour will begin at 5 p.m.

The exhibition and related events are sponsored by the Instructionally Related Activities Committee of Associated Students Inc., the student governing body on campus.

Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, the University Art Gallery is room A-107 on the first floor of LaCorte Hall. Admission is free.

CSU Dominguez Hills is located at 1000 E. Victoria Street in Carson. LaCorte Hall is on the west side of campus off Toro Center Drive/Tamcliff Street.

Visitor parking in campus lots is permitted with a valid parking pass. Passes are $4 and available at yellow dispensing machines at the perimeter of each campus lot.

Images of some of the teapots on display are online at www.cla.csudh.edu/dnp/art_gallery/exhibition_detail.asp?ageID=16. High resolution images are available upon request.
