FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CSU Dominguez Hills Student Research Day Set for Feb. 19
Depth of research and student-faculty collaborations highlighted

(Carson, CA) – Hundreds of students at California State University, Dominguez Hills will present their research in a variety of disciplines on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the university’s Fourth Annual Student Research Day.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Loker Student Union on campus. Presentation and poster sessions are open to the public.

“Student involvement in research and scholarly activity is an essential part of the learning experience, and a venue to share this scholarship with the university community is much needed. Student Research Day serves this role and allows all of us to come together to celebrate scholarship,” said Mohammad Eyadat, assistant professor of computer science and chair of the Student Research Day Organizing Committee.

The day-long event will feature students presenting their research before an audience and a panel of judges. Approximately 120 presentations are scheduled. The first and second place winners from each of the six academic sessions will receive $100 and a gift certificate, respectively. The judges will also select 10 presenters to go on and represent the university at the 23rd annual system-wide California State University Student Research Competition, which will take place May 1 and 2 on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles.

Research topics span the spectrum of disciplines, from history to health, business to biology, Chicano studies to computer science. Some of the titles of the research presentations to be given on Thursday include “File Conversions in Educational Use of iPods,” which examines various file conversion methods that could expand the educational use of devices like the iPod; “A Walk on Water: The Resurrection of Religion and Surfing 1860s to 1960s,” which explores the transformation of Christian condemnation of surfriding beginning in the 1890s to acceptance beginning in the 1960s; and “Recovering Histories,” which examines the life of Alicia Escalante, a welfare mother from East L.A. and her formation of the East Los Angeles Welfare Rights Organization in 1966.

A full schedule of the day, including abstracts for all of the research presentations, is available at www.csudh.edu/RF/student_research_day.htm.
