FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CSU Dominguez Hills Goes To Church
Part of California State University’s efforts to bring college message to black churches

(Carson, CA) – California State University, Dominguez Hills President Mildred García will be among a number of CSU presidents and officials who will bring the college message to thousands of prospective students and their families during the Fourth Annual CSU Super Sunday in Southern California this Sunday, Feb. 22. In all, CSU representatives will visit 25 churches that morning.

Now in its fourth year, Super Sunday is the CSU’s largest outreach to the African American community. Over two consecutive Sundays – Northern California churches were visited last week – Chancellor Charles B. Reed, campus presidents and trustees take the pulpits to stress the importance of college and the need for parents and communities to play a role in helping students get on track and succeed in college.

Efforts have yielded results: From 2004 to 2007, enrollment by African American students has increased nearly 20 percent, which equals 3,650 more African American students attending the CSU. Today, one in every 15 Cal State students is African American.

However, much work still needs to be done. African American students continue to lag behind in eligibility to attend the CSU, and in comparison with other applicants, they tend to submit incomplete applications. Super Sunday aims to reverse those trends.

CSU Dominguez Hills President García will speak at New Philadelphia AME Church in Rancho Dominguez at 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. She spoke there last year and was invited back by Pastor Sherman Gordon.

Following the service at New Philadelphia, outreach staff from the university and church education counselors will answer questions, and provide information about college applications and financial aid. Students will also be introduced to CSU Mentor, the website that prospective students use to find information and apply to a CSU campus. Participants will also receive the “How to Get to College” poster, which provides middle and high school students and their parents with step-by-step information on planning for college.

For more information, visit the CSU Super Sunday website. The site includes a list of participating churches, as well as background information and materials that will be shared with Super Sunday participants. New this year to the site are videos and a blog.
