Film Series at CSU Dominguez Hills Celebrates International Women’s Month

(Carson, CA) – The Women’s Center and Women’s Studies Program at California State University, Dominguez Hills are co-hosting a film series throughout the month of March in honor of International Women’s Month.

Films will be shown each Wednesday in March beginning at 7 p.m. in the Loker Student Union. Popcorn will be provided. All films include English subtitles.

Celebrated around the world, International Women’s Month raises awareness of the struggles of women in achieving equal political, social and economic rights. It coincides with March as Women’s History Month in the United States.

“This film series presents a perfect opportunity here at CSUDH for meaningful discussions of historical and contemporary issues that engage the spirit of International Women’s Month,” said Laura Talamante, assistant professor of history and one of the series’ organizers.

Opening the series on Wednesday, March 4, will be “Les Autre Filles (Girlfriends) ,” a coming-of-age French film that explores adolescent sexual curiosity. Note: this is a change from the original film scheduled to show, "Du Poil Sous Les Roses (Hair Under the Roses)."

On March 11, the film shown will be “Maquilapolis (City of Factories),” a documentary that chronicles the lives of two Mexican women working in Tijuana’s factories and their grassroots organizing for better conditions.

Continuing on March 18 will be a screening of “A l’Attaque! (Charge!),” a French film that comments on the effects of globalization through the lens of two screenwriters documenting a woman’s struggles to save her family business.

The series will conclude on March 25 with the Academy Award winning Dutch comedy, “Antonia’s Line,” which is set in a small Dutch village and explores social and gender issues in a humorous fashion.

The first International Women’s Month Film Series at CSU Dominguez Hills is being co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program, the Women’s Center, Toro Productions and the Department of History, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, in collaboration with Universciné.
