CSU Dominguez Hills Welcomes Artist Synthia Saint James

(Carson, CA) – California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) is please to welcome Synthia Saint James to campus on Thursday, March 12, for a lecture and discussion on art and her experiences over the last 40 year as an artist. A reception with live music and refreshments will take place at 5 p.m.  prior to the lecture, which will begin at 6 p.m. She will be available after the lecture to sign books.

CSUDH, local high school and community college students will be attending the event at the invitation of University Outreach and Information Services; the public is invited as well.

A prolific and internationally known artist, Saint James is perhaps most widely recognized as the artist who designed the Kwanzaa stamp for United States Postal Service. The Los Angeles native and self-taught artist has also authored and/or illustrated nearly two dozen books, from children’s picture books to cookbooks, and her paintings have been used for more than 60 book covers, including Terry McMillan’s best seller “Waiting to Exhale.”

Additionally, Saint James has designed major mural and stain glass installations that hang throughout the country and has created more than 50 commissioned pieces of art for major corporations and individual collectors. She most recently completed a commissioned work inspired by the election of President Barack Obama, “Fire Rainbow Obama,” and was the featured artist on the Barnes and Noble Black History Month celebration materials.  

The evening with Synthia Saint James is sponsored by the CSU Dominguez Hills University Library, University Outreach and Information Services, in conjunction with the Black Faculty and Staff Association.
