CSU Dominguez Hills Honors Faculty Excellence

(Carson, CA) – California State University, Dominguez Hills announces the four faculty members receiving the 2009 Faculty Awards, given annually in recognition of excellence in teaching. The awards were handed out last month at a reception jointly hosted by the Division of Academic Affairs, the Academic Senate and the Emeritus Faculty Association. The professors will be recognized again during the 2009 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 22.

Dr. Peter Desberg, professor of graduate education, was given the Presidential Outstanding Professor Award, presented to a full-time faculty member for exemplary achievement as a professor, scholar, mentor and community leader. Desberg, who has taught at CSU Dominguez Hills since 1970, is a clinical psychologist who instructs teachers in computer-assisted instruction, hypermedia and multimedia, child development, the psychology of reading and instructional humor. A certified product developer for Apple and Allegiant Technologies, he has developed software on task analysis and public speaking. He has also conducted research and written numerous books, articles, and monographs on teaching with technology, reading pedagogy, and overcoming stage fright.

A native of Budapest, Hungary, Desberg received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Southern California, his master’s degree in educational psychology from CSU Northridge, and his doctorate in educational psychology from USC. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Technology Education and Computer Using Educators (CUE).

Assistant professor of computer information systems, Dr. Mohammad Eyadat received this year’s Excellence in Service Award, which honors a faculty member who has contributed to university governance and development. Eyadat has served as chair of Student Research Day at CSU Dominguez Hills since its inception in 2005.

Eyadat began his career at CSU Dominguez Hills in 1998. An independent programmer and software developer for companies including KB Computer and 3Com in California, he has done extensive research in e-learning, Web accessibility, multimedia software security, watermarking algorithms for images and video data, software engineering and software reliability models, and systems performance evaluation. He has taught computer information systems and mathematics courses at a variety of institutions throughout California, including El Camino College in Torrance, Santa Monica College, and the DeVry Institute of Technology. In his native Jordan, Eyadat taught and oversaw computer labs at Mu’tah University in Al Karak and the University of Science and Technology in Irbid.

Eyadat received his bachelor’s degree in computer science from Yarmouk University in Jordan, his master’s in mathematics from the Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, Calif., a master’s in computer science from USC, and his doctorate in computer science and engineering mathematics from the Claremont Graduate School. He has served as a committee member for various international conferences, including the 11th International Business Information Management Conference held in Cairo last January.

Dr. Jon Hauss was recognized with the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award, which is named for the university’s founding vice president of Academic Affairs and professor of geography to acknowledge a faculty member who exemplifies the dedication and skill involved in quality teaching. An associate professor of English, Hauss is an expert on American literature and literary theory and has created and taught a variety of courses including “Literature and Popular Culture: A Fistful of Fiction” and “Studies in American Literature: The Slave’s Narrative.” His work has appeared in such journals as the Studies in the Novel, New Orleans Review, Literature and Psychology, Arizona Quarterly, English Language Notes, Western Humanities Review, and anthologies by Routledge and SUNY Press.

Hauss, who earned his doctorate in American literature from the University of Washington, is a 2003 recipient of the Sally Casanova Memorial Award, a research grant funded by the California State University system. Before arriving at CSU Dominguez Hills in 2002, he taught at Rhode Island College and had a Fulbright lectureship at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic.

The Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Award was given to Dr. Larry Rosen, professor of psychology, whose research focuses on the psychology of technology. The Van Nuys native teaches numerous related topics including the global impact of technology, research methods, program evaluation, child development, and behavior modification. The author of numerous articles, monographs and book chapters, and a columnist for the National Psychologist, Rosen has been widely interviewed by national media on the societal impact of technology and has presented at international conferences on topics including “The Effect of Virtual Worlds on Adolescents’ Real World Lives,” “Parental Limit Setting: Monitoring What Children are Doing in Cyberspace,” and “TechnoStress in Corporate America.”

Rosen graduated summa cum laude with his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned his doctorate in experimental psychology from the University of California, San Diego. The father of four children has written two books, “Me, MySpace and I: Parenting the MySpace Generation” and the forthcoming “Me, My eLife, and I: Teaching and Raising the Net Generation.”
