Labor Studies at CSU Dominguez Hills Organizes Free May Day Labor and Social Justice Fair

(Carson, CA) – California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), the only institution in Southern California offering a bachelor’s degree in labor studies, is pleased to announce the inaugural May Day Celebration: Labor Social Justice Fair taking place on Thursday, April 30. The fair is being organized by the Labor Studies Department and the Labor Studies Club.

The event celebrates May Day, the internationally holiday recognizing the achievements of the labor movement, and commemorates the martyrs of the Haymarket Massacre, who fought for the eight-hour work day. Under the theme “Uniting for Social Justice,” union leaders, elected officials, immigrant rights advocates, and social justice agents from across the Southwestern United States, along with CSUDH students and professors, will converge on the Carson campus for a day of networking, dialogue, and showcasing the revitalized labor movement. The event is free and open to the public.

Activities will take place inside and outside of the Loker Student Union from noon to 9 p.m., beginning with a fair and ending with a buffet dinner, musical groups, and a keynote address. Organizers are hoping to confirm newly appointed Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis as the keynote speaker. All events are free.

Organizations will provide an array of booths along the student union walkway with information on jobs, internships, and campaigns that participants can learn about while enjoying free refreshments and music and theater on the outdoor stage. At designated times during the day, participants will come inside for workshops on the Employee Free Choice Act, Careers in Labor, and Cutting-Edge Organizing Drives. Also included is an afternoon of dialogue on organizing and research with labor movement leaders and scholars hosted by the Southwest Labor Studies Association.

Student artists are currently creating an exhibit on the significance of May Day, which will be on display during the fair, and the winners of a high school, college and labor/community essay competition will be announced at the event.

Organizers of the Labor and Social Justice Fair invite the community at large to join them this day to celebrate the social and economic achievements of the labor movement throughout the United States and internationally. The event is free.

Sponsors of the fair to-date include the Diane Middleton Foundation, the Associated Student Inc., American Federation of Teachers, Communications Workers of America Local 9400, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63, PIPE trades, Teamsters Local 63, the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324, the American Federation of Teachers, the Los Angeles County and the Orange County Federations of Labor.
