CSU Dominguez Hills Music Department to Host Annual Rod Butler Memorial Scholarship Concert

WHAT:         Second Annual Rod Butler Memorial Scholarship Concert

WHERE:        University Theatre, California State University, Dominguez Hills
                   1000 E. Victoria St., Carson
COST:           Suggested donation $25 at the door; or $5 from students with ID.

(Carson, CA) – The Department of Music at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) will present a special concert on Saturday, March 28, to raise money for music major scholarships. Named in honor of longtime music professor Rod Butler, who passed away in November 2007, the concert will begin at 8 p.m. and take place in the University Theatre. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.

An alumnus of CSU Dominguez Hills, Butler returned to campus as a professor and ultimately chair of the music department, where he taught music composition, music theory and directed the student jazz ensemble. A professional composer, Butler brought his experiences in the music world into the classroom, exposing his students to real world applications whenever he could.

The program will feature original works by Butler, as well as works by Bach, Brahms, Handel and Paganini, all performed by some of Butler’s former music students — now professional musicians — current music students, music department faculty, and other colleagues from the university.

The concert is free, but donations of $25 at the door are requested. All proceeds benefit the Rod Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund for music students, which accepts donations throughout the year; contact Melodee Wilcox at (310) 243-3543 for a donation form.

CSU Dominguez Hills is at 1000 E. Victoria St. in Carson. The University Theatre is on the west side of campus off Toro Center Drive/Tamcliff Street.
