College of Natural & Behavioral Sciences Welcomes
Shell Pipeline Co. President as Distinguished Speaker

(Carson, CA) – Shell Pipeline Company, LP, President Mark Hurley will be the featured speaker at the California State University, Dominguez Hills College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Spring 2009 Distinguished Speakers Series luncheon on Tuesday, April 14. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Loker Student Union on campus.

Titled “American Energy Supply,” Hurley’s talk will focus on the story behind each gallon of fuel that goes into vehicle and airliners, as well as emerging trends in the oil industry, such as renewable fuels, domestic energy security, the role of the Los Angeles Basin in the industry, and current challenges for a company like Shell.

"We are very pleased that Mr. Hurley will be speaking to us about the numerous steps behind the production of gasoline and the emerging trends in energy,” said Charles Hohm, dean of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. “Our nation's ability to move beyond the consumption of foreign oil is paramount if we are to be successful and competitive as a country.”

A subsidiary of Shell Oil's Shell Oil Products U.S., Shell Pipeline Company is one of the largest petroleum pipeline transportation companies in the U.S., annually moving more than two billion gallons of crude oil and refined products through thousands of miles of pipelines and via tanker truck transport across 21 states. The company manages more than 1,200 miles of offshore pipelines, 600 miles of onshore pipelines, and more than 10 terminals throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurley was named president of Shell Pipeline Co, LP, in 2005. He joined the Shell family soon after graduating from North Carolina State University in 1981 with a degree in chemical engineering. His first job with Shell was as a refinery process engineer at the Norco Manufacturing Complex in south Louisiana, and through the years, he has held various management positions at a number of Shell subsidiaries. Hurley is currently chair of the America's Energy Coast Industry Council, a post he took in 2007.

This is the fourth College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences Distinguished Speakers Series luncheon. Past distinguished speakers have included Kenneth Trevett, former CEO of Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, Gilbert Ivey, chief administrative officer for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, and UCI sociologist and immigration scholar Rubén G. Rumbaut.

The luncheon is free to attend, but reservations are requested.  For reservations or more information, call (310) 243-2577.
