“Patrick West exemplifies the successes an education at Dominguez Hills affords students,” said CSUDH Provost Ron Vogel. “We are very pleased to welcome him back to campus for Honors Convocation. His story is sure to inspire this year’s honorees to use their education and expertise to give back to the community.

West graduated from CSU Dominguez Hills with a MBA in 1986. At the time, he was serving as the city of Paramount’s director of parks and recreation, making a name for himself through a successful anti-gang program targeting fifth graders. He continued to focus on community building and city beautification efforts as ways to reduce gang activity and crime in his role as director of community development, then director of the Redevelopment Agency, and eventually as Paramount’s city manager, a position he served in for 11 years.

In 2005 he left Paramount for Long Beach, taking up a familiar post as director of community development and executive director of the Redevelopment Agency, but this time for the fifth largest city in California. He was appointed its city manager in 2007, charged with the management of all city departments and a city budget of more than $3 million.

A native of southern California, West was born in Inglewood and grew up in the Los Angeles area. He also holds a master’s of recreation administration from U.C. Irvine and a bachelor’s degree from Cal State L.A.

Honors Convocation serves as a public demonstration of the university’s commitment to academic excellence and a time to honor outstanding student achievement. The evening’s ceremony recognizes the hundreds of students who will graduate with honors, participated in prestigious academic program on campus, received special recognition in their major, earned scholarships, or have been inducted into honor societies.

Honors Convocation is part of the annual commencement activities. For more information about it and the 2009 undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies, visit www.csudh.edu/commencement.
