School of Education Professor Lynne Cook Named To National Committee to Update Teaching Standards

(Carson, CA) – Dr. Lynne Cook, professor of special education and director of the newly developed doctorate in educational leadership at California State University, Dominguez Hills, has been selected by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), a nonprofit that provides leadership and advocacy on major education issues, to serve on its Project to Update the INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) Model Core Standards Committee, which will be tasked with revising and developing a new set of national core teaching standards for the 21st century teacher.

“I’ve long been an advocate of national standards that recognize and address the needs of diverse student populations,” Cook said. “The increasing diversity and the changing learning and teaching demands of the 21st century make this a most critical time to reconsider the INTASC standards. I am terrifically honored to have been selected for this important work.”

Over the next year, Cook and 23 other education experts, researchers, policymakers and practitioners from across the nation will meet to update the INTASC’s “Model Standards for Beginning Teacher Licensing, Assessment and Development: A Resource for State Dialogue (Model Core Standards),” which was first drafted in 1992 and has been adopted by 38 states, including California. The original Model Core Standards articulated what all beginning teachers should know, be like, and be able to do in order to practice responsibly, regardless of the subject matter or grade level being taught. The Project to Update the INTASC Model Core Standards Committee’s ultimate goal in revising the 1992 document is for it to become the national standard for the profession.

“INTASC is bringing together the best thinkers in the country around teacher policy to discuss what a vision of good teaching looks like in the 21st century learning context,” said INTASC director, Kathleen Paliokas, adding that the committee's revisions to the Model Core Standards will respond to the questions: “What have we learned from research about best practice, how children learn, and the learning context that is necessary to meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s learners?”
