SATURDAY ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR (CAHSEE)

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Upward Bound is a federally funded grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and works with students who are college-bound. The Upward Bound program will host approximately 50 high school students, on the Dominguez Hills campus for CAHSEE and CAHSEE preparation. UB instructors will work with students to enhance their educational growth in test preparation. Instructors are responsible for curriculum and classroom management duties. The Upward Bound program focuses on setting high expectations for academic achievement, behavior personal development and student accountability. Teaching hours are from 8:30am– 12:45pm every other Saturday of the month October-December.

% of TIME ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Constant
(77-100%)

  • Provide classroom instruction in assigned academic course each week
  • Evaluate each student’s skills, knowledge, and concepts of subject taught, and prepare written program and attendance reports.
  • Identify students’ needs and cooperate with other staff in assessing or helpingsolve personal and learning problems.
  • Establish and maintain classroom standards needed to provide an orderly andproductive learning environment.
  • Provide a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere conducive to maximum studentgrowth.

 2. Occasional
(10-33%)

  • Work with program staff to enforce program policies.
  • Interpret and ensure compliance of rules and regulations by students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement a rigorous curriculum that will improve the students’ knowledge on CAHSEE or CAHSEE curriculum.

  • Maintain class records, attendance, grades, assignments, etc.

  • Must be able to provide a safe learning environment where students are challenged by academic rigor and supported academically and personally.

  • Attend staff meetings and an orientation/training

  • Work with Program Coordinator in selecting course content and classroom activities

  • Meet all deadlines for paperwork or other information requested by the Program  Coordinator

  • Exercise classroom management

  • Develop a positive and supportive rapport with students

  • Other duties as assigned

NOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to work within a TEAM setting.

  • Knowledge of curriculum-based teaching is essential.

  • Represent the College in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors and the general public.

  • Must be enthusiastic and energetic in performance of assigned duties and  responsibilities.

  • Must be a self starter and have the ability to function under limited supervision.

  • Must have the ability to read and understand written and oral instructions or communications.

  • Must have the ability to efficiently perform tasks in an environment of frequent  interruptions.

  • Must have the ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and  exercise good judgment when making decisions.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Previous teaching experience with underrepresented students preferred.

  • Sensitivity to the needs of low-income 1st generation college students

  • Must be available for orientations prior to start date.

  • Must be available from October-December

  • Ability to challenge, motivate and inspire students

 SALARY: $20.00-25.00 an hour DOE
