Active Learning Classrooms

At CSUDH, the adoption of ALC pedagogy is in line with the vision and core values outlined in the Strategic Plan 2014-2020. Empirical research also supports the use of active learning techniques. A recent meta-analysis (Freeman et al, 2014) of 225 studies that compared traditional learning to active learning found that students in active learning classrooms scored higher on their exams (a 6% increase in exam scores on average) and were less likely to fail the course (students in traditional courses were 1.5 times more likely to fail the course).

Over 30 faculty have participated in the program already and up to 8 new faculty can participate each year. Active Learning Program participants will receive training, resources, one-on-one support, and a small stipend for their course redesign.
