Course Description:

This course examines a great variety of global music in the contexts of dance, religion, politics, ethnicity, socio-economic considerations, and other interdisciplinary frameworks, sometimes with social science/anthropological perspectives. The class studies popular, folk, and classical music from many different origins. Musical instruments and genres are featured topics as the course studies traditions from the U.S., Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Elements of music, sound, and aspects of the discipline of ethnomusicology are cornerstones of the course. Students will gain reading and listening experience in class, and online through the course’s textbook resources.
