Become a First-Year Peer Coach!

General Description:

Dominguez Hills First Year Experience (#DHFYE) Peer Academic Coaches provide mentoring and support geared toward helping facilitate the transition before, during, and after new student orientation. They also provide supplemental academic and social involvement opportunities for our incoming freshmen students at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Peer Academic Coaches will work collaboratively to assist incoming freshmen students to be academically successful while helping them make a smooth transition from their high school to life on campus as a Toro.

#DHFYE Peer Coaches build relationships with incoming freshmen students and coach them on topics such as developing effective study skills and strategies, time management, goal-setting, test-taking skills and learning styles. This is achieved through group and/or individual meetings and will serve as a resource by introducing students to academic support services and connecting them to advisors on campus. #DHFYE Peer Coaches participate in on-going interactive training and development that provides them an opportunity to enhance their leadership, organizational, and academic skills thus making them an integral support to incoming freshmen students, the University Advisement Center (UAC), and California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Successful Peer Coaches Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be at least a sophomore.
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA per term and cumulative GPA at the time their application is submitted, at the official start of their employment, and throughout the time they are employed in Dominguez Hills First Year Experience Program.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units per semester for the academic school year.
  • Be able to provide supervisor with at least 15 hours of availability per week each semester during the upcoming academic year.
  • Be able to commit to the position for the upcoming academic school year (August- May)
  • Be able to participate in #DHFYE Peer Coach Training (TBD)
  • Be able to complete the required Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9). This requires you to provide documents that verify you are eligible to work in the USA.

Responsibilities:

  • Take the lead in supporting incoming freshmen students individually and in small groups through becoming acquainted with your cohort of students’ academic needs by being approachable and available, supporting and encouraging to enrich their experiences via campus involvement and leadership opportunities.
  • Must enroll in the UNV 395 course (offered Summer Session 1) to help prepare for the #DHFYE Peer Coach professional experience and helping your freshmen students.
  • Collaborate with peers, faculty, advisors, and campus resources to maximize the quality of the coaches’ experience.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for incoming freshmen students about academic and student life.
  • Attend weekly meetings for on-going professional development training.
  • Attend and actively participate in additional training as deemed necessary.
  • Provide written assessment and reports regarding student caseload weekly.
  • Provide brief written description regarding attended events/ workshops on campus.
  • Keep accurate and thorough documentation of interactions with students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the program is successful during the academic year.
