Become a Transfer Peer Coach

General Description:

Transfer Peer Coaches provide mentoring and support geared toward helping facilitate the transfer process before, during, and after new student orientation. They also provide supplemental academic and social involvement opportunities of our incoming transfer students at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Coaches will work collaboratively to assist incoming transfer students to be academically successful while helping them make a smooth transition from their transferring Community College to life on campus as a Toro.
 
Transfer Peer Coaches build relationships with incoming transfer students and coach them on topics such as developing effective study skills and strategies, time management, goal-setting, test-taking skills and learning styles. They do this through workshops and/or individual meetings and will serve as a resource by introducing students to academic support services and connecting them to advisors on campus. Transfer Peer Coaches participate in on-going interactive training and development that provides them an opportunity to enhance their leadership, organizational, and academic skills thus making them an integral support to incoming transfer students, the UATC, and California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Successful Transfer Peer Coaches Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a transfer student
  • Have a least a 3.0 GPA at the time their application is submitted, at the official start of their employment, and throughout the time they are employed in Dominguez Hills Transfer Learning Community.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units per semester for the upcoming academic school year
  • Be able to provide supervisor with at least 8 hours of availability per week each semester during the academic year.
  • Commit to the position for a full academic school year (August- May)
  • Participate in DHTLC Transfer Peer Coach Training (TBD)
  • Be able to complete the required Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9). This requires you to provide documents that verify you are eligible to work in the USA.

Responsibilities:

  • Take the lead in supporting incoming transfer students individually and in small groups through becoming acquainted with your cohort of students’ academic needs by being approachable and available, supporting and encouraging to enrich their experiences via campus involvement and leadership opportunities
  • Must enroll in the UNV 395 course (offered Summer Session 1) to help prepare for the Transfer Peer Coach
  • professional experience and helping your fellow transfer students
  • Collaborate with peers, faculty, advisors, and campus resources to maximize the quality of the coaches’ experience
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for incoming transfer students about academic and student life
  • Attend some community college visits with academic advisors
  • Attend weekly meetings for on-going professional development training
  • Attend and actively participate in additional training as deemed necessary
  • Provide written assessment and reports regarding student caseload weekly
  • Keep accurate and thorough documentation of interactions with students
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the program is successful during the academic year
