Esports continues to grow in popularity among K-12 students, and can be utilized as a conduit to academic learning. Research shows that participation in school activities can improve the students’ overall social, emotional, and academic performance. Developing an esports program in your school can improve engagement throughout subject areas such as math, reading, writing and computer science. Thus, active student participation in esports can lead to higher motivational and positive attitudinal changes in their academic efforts.

The school's culture can be enhanced through the interactivity of esports along with potential learning connections with career technical options. The esports certificate program can encourage collaboration among teacher leaders, school technologists, and administrators on how to incorporate an esports association in their school site as a supplemental motivational tool for existing program.

The esports online certificate will provide an in-depth examination of the esports industry
as well as enhanced connections to teaching and learning environments for academic
disciplines. Included in the program are the numerous esports resources and potential
mentoring after the esports certificate program completion. Esports will integrate collegiate educators in a coordinated effort towards developing an environment conducive to active learning. Using the collaborative modality of learning can connect students and educators closer together in a rigorous academic environment by promoting student engagement and motivation in the learning process.

Esports leaders, academics, practitioners, and K-12 educators will coordinate efforts in developing an environment conducive to active learning. Using the collaborative modality of learning, esports will connect students and educators in the areas of academic rigor by promoting student engagement and motivation in the learning process. 

Module 1
Discuss the evolution of interdisciplinary academic and team development.

Module 2
Examine the roles of gamers and processes embedded in building team roles and goal setting.

Module 3
Develop an interdisciplinary approach with Career Technical Education options in regards to game development, marketing and social media connections.

Module 4
Investigate industry partnerships and fieldwork options for esports.


To receive the Certificate of Completion, candidates must successfully complete the four modules in the course. The certificate program will provide two Continuing Education Units (CEUs). A Certificate of Completion is awarded upon successful completion of the required course. A digital badge is also provided.


All classes are offered online using Blackboard and Zoom. 


Steven Brownson, PhD., is the Chief Learning Officer for Current Innovative Online Design. He has 27 years experience and is an expert in Learning Management Systems, including Blackboard, eCollege, and Canvas. He has designed and developed online, hybrid, and onsite courses, including the integration of multimedia and technology for enhancing interactivity and student satisfaction, and student-oriented course design with precise, career-related applications. He has also developed assessment measuring tools for course design. He is Quality Matters Certified as a Master Reviewer, a Language Acquisition/Bilingual Specialist, and a STEM Methods Specialist. He received his PhD. from Capella University Instructional Design for Online Learning in 2009. 

The Introduction to esports Certificate program is presented in partnership between the College of Education and the College of Extended and International Education.
