HEX 987 | School Health Fitness & Nutrition Education (10 CEUs)

Comprehensive School Wellness This course prepares K-12 professionals to analyze the factors that contribute to poor nutrition and physical inactivity among school-age youth as described in Section 4108 of SSAE and the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act. Standards-aligned and research-based lesson plans, advocacy tools, and parent education materials will be developed to improve health and academic outcomes among K-12 populations.

Prerequisites

This is an upper level course and a degree or experience in general education, school administration, school health education, school nursing, school counseling, or public health education is strongly recommended.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Synthesize data to identify the prevalence of physical inactivity, poor nutrition, food insecurity and other factors that can lead to chronic disease among K-12 school populations.
  2. Create teacher tools that support an understanding of the components of fitness, exercise, nutrients, food, and food labeling.
  3. Analyze the factors associated with chronic disease related physical inactivity and poor nutrition.
  4. Develop evidence-based resources and materials that support healthy physical activity and healthy eating patterns among K-12 school populations.
  5. Develop capacity building tools for school leaders to establish or refine policies or practices that reflect healthy, safe, and supportive elementary, middle, or high school learning environments to enhance students’ learning skills which are essential for school readiness and academic success.
