Effective Online Teaching Practices


Under the direction of the Provost Office with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Development, a new innovative teaching opportunity is available for faculty for 2020-2021.

As part of our CSU initiative to support student success, faculty at eight CSUs including CSUDH, are now invited to enroll in a 25-week course in Effective Online Teaching Practices to learn instructional skills shown to improve student achievement and close equity gaps. ACUE’s course is based on more than three decades of research that shows effective teaching improves learning for all students. According to the independently validated research, students, particularly those who are underserved, are more engaged, learn more, and complete courses in greater numbers when taught by ACUE-credentialed faculty.

Faculty who complete the course requirements will be awarded a nationally recognized Certificate in Effective College Instruction that is co-endorsed by Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) and the American Council on Education (ACE). When is it?

This is a year-long program (Fall   2020-Spring 2021) that will include a kick-off Zoom orientation on Friday, September 18.

Who should enroll?

Faculty should apply who are interested in joining their colleagues in an iterative process of taking their teaching to the next level; thus, there is value for both the novice instructor but also the long-time experienced faculty member interested in finding more joy and inspiration in their craft of teaching. 

  • You must be actively teaching a course for both Fall and Spring and be able to protect roughly 3 hours per week. 
  • This is ideal for faculty after they have built their online Fall 2020 course and want to connect with colleagues on how to facilitate learning effectively.
  • Teaching certificates for the higher education context are rare so this can be a useful way to demonstrate evidence of your teaching effectiveness for reappointment, retention, tenure or promotion. 
  • Spots are limited and will be prioritized based on: those teaching lower division high fail rate & equity gap courses, newer faculty and coordinated teams of faculty. 

Is there funding?

Yes. To earn both $1000 in funding and the Certificate in Effective College Instruction, participants must complete all the activities in the 25-module course.

This is a rare opportunity for CSUDH, as this program instead usually charges faculty $1200 (or more) to enroll. This has been made possible due to a National Association of System Heads (NASH) grant that the Chancellor's Office secured. It is unknown if continued funding for this will be available after next year; grab your spot today. 

What are the program goals?

In this program you will learn about and implement new evidence-based teaching practices. The unique part of this program is that it will demonstrate how to apply each teaching practice in both an online and face-to-face environment. Aligned with the latest research in cognition and adult learning, ACUE’s program address over 200 evidence-based teaching practices, covering how to design an effective course, establish a productive learning environment, use active learning strategies, promote higher order thinking and utilize assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.

  1. Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Online & Face-to-Face Learning Environment: Embracing Diversity; Checking for Student Understanding; Providing Useful Feedback; Helping Students Persist; Engaging Underprepared Students; Promoting Learning Environments
  2. Promoting Active Online & Face-to-Face Learning: Developing Effective Modules and Microlectures; Teaching Powerful Note-taking; Using Groups to Ensure Active Learning; Using the Active Learning Cycle; Planning Effective Discussions; Facilitating Engaging Discussions
  3. Inspiring Inquiry and Preparing Lifelong Learners: Motivating Students; Providing Clear Directions and Explanations; Integrating Visualization Tools; Using Data and Feedback to Improve Teaching; Using Advanced Questioning; Self-Directed Learners; 
  4. Designing Student-Centered Online & Face-to-Face Courses: Establishing Powerful Learning Outcomes; Aligning Assessments with Course Outcomes; Developing Fair, Consistent, and Transparent Grading Practices; Developing and Using Rubrics and Checklists; Preparing an Effective Syllabus
