University Scholarships

Application Process

The online application is available here for current CSUDH students and incoming CSUDH-admitted students with an activated Toromail account. The general online application (accessible via the my.CSUDH.edu portal) must be submitted electronically by the specific deadline. In addition to the online application and autobiographical statement, a letter of recommendation is required to be uploaded into the application no later than one week after the application deadline by a teacher or faculty member. Students who complete a general application will automatically be considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

Awarding and Notification Process

Scholarship programs available exclusively to CSUDH students.

Scholarships are normally awarded during the spring and summer for the upcoming academic year. During that time, scholarship award notifications will be sent which will include the name and amount of the scholarship. The award will also be posted to your student account. Consideration for additional scholarship awards may continue throughout the academic year.

University Scholarship Programs

The scholarship programs listed below are available exclusively to CSUDH students.

University scholarships are administered by the Financial Aid Office and various colleges and departments on campus. These are available for both incoming and/or continuing students and are generally awarded based on financial need, academic performance, community service, and leadership. All scholarships require a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher and enrollment criteria may vary by each scholarship.

CSUDH Alumni Scholarship

Description: Awarded to a full-time undergraduate and graduate student
Amount: $2,000
Requirements: 

  • Must be enrolled full-time during the Spring 2019 semester to apply for the scholarship
  • Must be enrolled full-time during the Fall 2019 semester to receive the scholarship
  • Must have earned at least 12 undergraduate units or 8 graduate units
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Catalina Island Scholarship

Requirements: Must be a current Catalina Island resident or have attended high school on Catalina Island.

College of Business and Public Policy Scholarships

Description: A wide range of scholarships awarded to CSUDH undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in the fields of Business Administration, Public Administration, or Criminal Justice Administration.
Amount: $250 to $1,000
Requirements: Students must be currently enrolled and purusing a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, or Criminal Justice Administration.

College of Education

CSUDH Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Description: Awarded to full-time CSUDH undergraduate, graduate, or credential students.
Amount: Varies
Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time CSUDH student, credential student with 12 units, or graduate student with 8 units
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated school and community involvement

CSU Future Scholars

Description: 30 renewable scholarships awarded to entering disadvantaged freshman or transfer students.
Amount: $1,000
Requirements:

  • Must be a full-time CSUDH student during award year
  • Entering freshman or transfer student from an economically, educationally and/or environmentally disadvantaged background

Dr. Herman Loether Memorial Social Research Scholarship

Description: Established to honor Dr. Herman Loether, this scholarship supports Sociology students engaged in scholarly research activities.
Amount: Up to $1,000
Requirements:

  • Must be a Sociology major (undergraduate with Junior or Senior class standing, or graduate), in good standing with the university
  • Must be enrolled for upcoming Spring 2019 semester
  • Must be actively engaged in sociological research (e.g. involvement in the UCRC, Sociology 302 or 502, or other research activities with Sociology faculty at CSUDH)
  • Must have commitment to continuing education and attaining a graduate professional degree

Dr. Lois W. Chi Emeritus Faculty Association Science Scholarship

Description: Awarded to currently enrolled CSUDH undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or a closely-related field in the biomedical sciences. Preference is given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in a natural science.
Amount: $1,000 - $2,500
Requirements:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Need for financial assistance
  • Must be pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or a related natural science field
  • Applicants must submit a thoughtful essay detailing their future career/college goals: Tell why a college education is important to you, as well as the personal commitment you've made to get this far in your educational journey. Explain how completing your CSUDH degree will help you transform your life and the lives of others. Describe the ways you've served your community, and how your university degree will enable you to continue to serve.

Graduate Equity Fellowships

Description: Awarded by the CSUDH Graduate Studies Office to graduate students with strong academic records and financial need; renewable for two years.
Amount: Up to $5,600
Requirements:

  • Must be accepted into a CSUDH graduate program
  • Must have faculty sponsor
  • Must commit to a research project

Honors Scholarship

Description: Awarded to incoming freahman or transfer students who meet the academic requirements; renewable for up to four years for freshmen and two years for transfer students.
Amount: $2,500 - $3,000
Requirements:
High school graduates:

  • Minimum 3.4 GPA
  • Minimum 1000 SAT* or 25 ACT score

Transfer students:

  • Minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Must meet all general education requirements
*SAT scores are Math plus Critical Reading scores only, with a minimum score of 500 in each.

Jack Kilfoil Scholarship in History

Description: Awarded to current and incoming CSUDH students majoring in History.
Amount: $500
Requirements: Must be a current CSUDH student majoring in History, or community college or high school student entering CSUDH to pursue a major in History
How to apply: Students must submit a completed application (click here to download when available), a sample of applicant's historical writing, transcripts (non-official accepted), and a personal statement. James and Jocelyn Lyons Scholarship

Description: Awarded to entering first-time freshman students.
Amount: Varies
Requirements:

  • Must be entering CSUDH as a first-time freshman
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for a university education

Jamina O. Barnes Memorial Scholarship

Description: Awarded by the CSUDH Alumni Association to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student.
Amount: Starts at $500
Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled full-time during the Spring 2019 semester to apply for the scholarship
  • Must be enrolled full-time during the Fall 2019 semester to receive the scholarship
  • Must have earned at least 12 undergraduate units or 8 graduate units
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

Katherine Bogdanovich Loker Scholarship

Description: Awarded to an incoming freshman student from Carson, Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Torrance, or Wilmington.
Amount: $4,000
Requirements:

  • Must be entering CSUDH as a first-time freshman
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must be a resident of Carson, Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Torrance, or Wilmington

Leonard Moite Memorial Scholarship

Description: Supports a student majoring in Economics or pursuing a concentration in Economics.
Amount: $500
Requirements:

  • Must major in or pursue a concentration in Finance or Economics
  • Must be enrolled in at least two (2) Finance or two (2) Economics classes in the semester applied
  • Junior or Senior class standing
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Committed to attaining a Master's Degree, Doctorate, or Professional Degree

Applicants will also be required to submit: one copy of a CSUDH unofficial transcript; a 500-word, double-spaced personal statement; and one letter of recommendation from a Finance or Economics faculty member.

Leo F. and Margaret B. Cain Emeritus Faculty Association Scholarship

Description: Awarded to an outstanding CSUDH undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at CSUDH pursuing a degree in a public service field.
Amount: $1,000 - $2,500
Requirements:

  • Demonstrate excellent academic performance and career commitments to teaching or academic research, educational administration, or other types of public service. Preference is given to full-time graduate students.
  • Applicants must submit a thoughtful essay detailing their future career/college goals: Tell why a college education is important to you, as well as the personal commitment you've made to get this far in your educational journey. Explain how completing your CSUDH degree will help you transform your life and the lives of others. Describe the ways you've served your community, and how your university degree will enable you to continue to serve. Essays should be one to two pages long, typed and double spaced.

Lonnie Gene Sims Memorial Scholarship

Description: Awarded to CSUDH undergraduate and graduate students majoring in STEM disciplines, who live in Compton or graduated from Compton High School.
Amount: $2,000
Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or another STEM major
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must be in good standing with the university
  • Must live in the city of Compton or be a graduate of Compton High School

Lucia and Leopoldo Garcia Scholarship

Description: Awarded to an incoming CSUDH freshman student from an area high school.
Amount: Varies
Requirements:

  • Must be incoming CSUDH freshman student from an area high school
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must complete a separate university scholarship application and submit a one-page essay describing their enthusiasm for a college education

Mark Steven Sankey Memorial Scholarship

Description: Awarded to a CSUDH undergraduate student of Junior or Senior standing.
Requirements:

  • CSUDH undergraduate student with Junior or Senior class standing
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Open to all majors

Math Department Scholarships

Description: The William Armacost Memorial Scholarship and Marcie Stewart Memorial Scholarship are awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate Mathematics majors (any option).
Amount: $750 each
Requirements:

  • Students must be currently enrolled undergraduate Mathematics majors (any option)
  • Additional requirements apply to each scholarship

Nursing Scholarships

Description: A wide range of scholarships are awarded to CSUDH students in the School of Nursing. For more information on available scholarship opportunities in Nursing, please visit the School of Nursing website here.

Rene Romero Memorial Scholarship

Description: Rene Romero was a CSUDH student majoring in digital media arts and audio recording. He was a devoted campus leader. An endowment in his name has been established, and awards this scholarship to an undergraduate CSUDH student majoring in Audio Recording.
Amount: $500
Requirements:

  • Undergraduate student
  • Majoring in Audio Recording
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Complete a University Scholarship Application
  • Personal Statement of 500 words or less, describing the student's future career/college/personal goals, why a college education is important, and how their degree will transform their life and community.

Sam Wiley Scholarship

Description: Awarded to continuing CSUDH Physics majors for the 2019-2020 academic year. Click here for additional information.
Amount: $1,000
Requirements:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must be pursuing a degree in Physics
  • Currently enrolled at CSUDH
  • Preference is given to full-time upper division students, although others may apply
  • Continuing student status must be maintained to receive the award

Sigma Pi Robert Hashimoto Memorial Scholarship

Description: Awarded to CSUDH students who have shown leadership on campus and within the community.
Amount: $500 - $700

  • Must be currently enrolled at CSUDH and in good academic standing

Description: Awarded to a CSUDH undergraduate student of Junior or Senior standing in the Division of Kinesiology and Recreation.

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need

Yvonne Brathwaite Burke Scholarship

Description: Awarded to a full-time CSUDH student majoring in Public Administration, Criminal Justice Administration, Labor Studies, Economics, or Political Science.
Amount: Varies
Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at CSUDH
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Majoring in Public Administration, Criminal Justice Administration, Labor Studies, Economics, or Political Science
  • Resident of the County of Los Angeles
  • Demonstrate community involvement related to improving opportunities for children, encouraging economic development, or improving transportation in Los Angeles
